I've started to submit patches and pull requests to Audiopub! That's right, it's free, open source software if you didn't know. I have quite a few of my own feature ideas (some of which are quite large-scale and may never happen, some of which are smaller and quite possibly will), and there are already a few things I'm working on that I expect will be live soon, but I'll leave you guessing at to what exactly they are for the moment. 😛
I'd love your feedback on exactly what you'd like to see added! There's no guarantees that I'll implement everything you suggest, and I am mindful of maintaining the spirit of the site, and implementing features that help foster the community rather than breaking it up, but let's get the discussion rolling.

idk, probably needless as well, but notifications via ntfy/pushover, and be able to follow/subscribe to a user so you can get notifications when they upload? I get if that is over the top, tbf audiopub is still relativly small and overviewable.

Categories /tags for Audios, such as, idk, talking, gaming, etc.? I'm just saying what comes to my mind again so totally up to you what you do with it. But that way you could filter more precisely what you wanna listen to, if you're looking for gameplays for example.

I mean transcriptions would be nice with some sort of AI model for really long drawn out recordings of people talking with a lot of pauses and loud mic breathing
but idk how feasible that would be.

NGL I'd rather people learn to present more effectively rather than try and follow the plot with an AI transcription.

Also searching things that'd be one of my top reqs, I was thinking to pr that myself but glad someone else is on it lmao. Better searching algo, able to match query not just with exact title name or something but users and other metadata, and maybe also able to filter in searches?
Speaking of users a way to view users may be cool or search for users too. IDK I never got far enough like I said to implement this so I didn't really figure out the structure in my head so I'll leave that to you but those are my rough ideas in a very stream-of-consciousness fashion.

Playback speed is natively supported by your browser! Just right click the audio player.

it would be great to have some option to upload dyrectly from android... BTW maybe it is somewhat possible but i have no idea how to do it.

Tried right-clicking in Brave, Chrome, and Edge, no dice. The only thing there is a checkbox that says show all controls, but it's dimmed on all three browsers and doesn't activate. There is an option to loop, but no speed control and no way to activate that checkbox.

Well, it's possible to post on Android, just like you would on a PC.

In Chrome based browsers you press "Show more media controls, more options" (button on the audio player), then you press "Show playback speed menu".

Re. transcripts: I don't think it's off the table but obviously there are privacy and resource usage concerns. However Whisper.cpp isn't that hard to run, so it's not out of the relm of possibility. I'm not making any promises there though.

Re. better search: yeh this is on my list. There are limits to what we can do without switching databases, but I'll do some digging. Or maybe we'll transition to PostgreSQL. At the very least I want more fields to be searched by the search box, so you can E.G. find users, including by display name.

Re. categories / tags: my personal take on this is that we should have tags, because they're ephemeral (they're not hard-coded by Audiopub). Of course that means different people may use different tags for the same thing, but I think its worth it for the flexibility.

Re. notifications: NTFY was my initial thought, but I'm going to see if we can implement WebPush instead, as it means you wouldn't even need an app (just allow notifications directly from the website). Apparently Apple's implementation has some quirks though so I will do some more reading first.

Re. built-in recording: yeh I think this is largely superfluous, and I don't know how easy it would be to implement. We could probably do it but the question is if it's worth the effort.

The things we were talking about on TT the other day would be great. Mainly streaming and RSS, as well as chapters. Hoping for those the most.

Those are probably in the reverse order that they'll be implemented in (if they're indeed implemented, we have some concerns around how to moderate streaming for instance, as discussed in TLE). But I will certainly see what I can do. Chapters are fairly uncontroversial and should be doable though.

Oh yeah, chapters would be cool, RSS for users also. And streaming, well, that would probably be a bigger thing? Guess you could maybe run icecast behind it or something? It would be nice to be able to stream from the typical appications like OBS or a proper implementation in Browser so you can also stream from phone.

If we do streaming (which I quite highly doubt because of moderation concerns as I said), it would be Icecast powered, yes.

It's definitely possible. The problem is, it's fairly easy to moderate Audiopub when people post (usually short) audio files, and we can delete the files, warn them, ban them, etc. But when people are able to speak live, for large amounts of time, unless we had enough moderators to be constantly listening to streams, it would be much harder to make sure nobody's being nasty. We would be able to forcibly disconnect disconnect people and take away their live streaming capabilities, but we're worried that wouldn't be quite enough.

That's understandable. I guess you could add a report system though? Yeah, that could of course also be abused, but record/save the streams, if not forever for archival purposes, for a week or something, have a report system where if there is anything, people can report, possibly with a timestamp or chat whatsoever, and then moderate based on that. Watching all streams and proactively stopping anything from happening in that minute won't be possible, yes.
